Second Chance Horse Rescue (VO/2469) is based on a small island in the EU, Malta. Our mission is to give retired racehorses from the track a second chance at life by taking them in, rehabilitate and rehome them to green pastures overseas, particularly in the UK. There, they transition into new roles as leisure and riding horses, where they can thrive in environments that provide more space and resources than we can offer locally.
Second Chance Horse Rescue encounters a diverse range of equine conditions, some are healthy and well-cared-for, while others arrive neglected, malnourished, or even at risk of slaughter. Space is a constant challenge at our rescue, so we focus on finding forever homes for these horses overseas. This not only secures their future but also frees up space at our sanctuary for more horses that need our help.
Over 110 horses retire from the track each year in Malta, all in need of new homes.
Our work spans across two regions: in Malta, we operate a small but dedicated sanctuary, led by a passionate group of young volunteers who have made it their mission to save as many horses as possible from uncertain fates. Meanwhile, our UK team; comprised of adult volunteer who also represents our charity in the UK, works tirelessly to ensure that each rehomed horse is placed into a caring, supportive environment.
Our goal is to make sure these horses get the second chance they deserve. With every successful rehoming, we create room for more horses in need, continuing our mission of providing care and a future for retired racehorses.
